Flybase entry New window?

The mutant phenotype that we saw when we crossed the two deletions which removed the gene, and which we could rescue by expressing the wild type gene in that background, was an inability of larvae to carry out vigorous, concerted head swinging to scrape their way out of the egg shell at the end of Stage 17. The developed larvae were thus trapped alive within the egg. This reminded me of one of the stories by Edgar Allen Poe that had made a great impression on me when I was a child, about a man who was lured down to a wine cellar for a drink and then bricked in alive while he was in a drunken stupor. The name of the story is The Cask of Amontillado, which is the source of the name for the gene.
