About FlyNomeFlyNome was started by a Drosophila researcher who became frustrated when a single source for the stories behind gene names could not be found. While one can pick up some of the history behind the names from fellow researchers, by induction from a mutant phenotype, or even from a published paper, many names remain a mystery when it comes to their origin. Out of this frustration sprang FlyNome. This site is intended to be a resource for the Drosophila community by serving as a reliable tool to which fly researchers can refer and contribute. You can find out more about the history of FlyNome on the What's New page. About the Fly GnomeThe little blue guy in the upper right corner is the Fly Gnome. He is the result of a painstaking search of clip-art sites around the web (found at Jo's World), followed by a little Photoshop and ImageReady doctoring to convert him from just a gnome to our mascot, the Fly Gnome.
Technical aspects of FlyNome.comThis site was initially developed as a project for a class in JavaScript, PERL and SQL at the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
